Crime Victim Services

CVS is a community-based program that focuses on the needs of the victims and their families. Victim Specialist/Advocate provides assistance to victims within the criminal justice system. They offer emotional support, victims’ rights information, help in finding needed resources and filing out crime victim related forms. Victim Specialist are committed to maintain highest levels of confidentiality in their communications with their victims.

Supportive Listening- Listening to the victim/survivor and their families and helping them manage their feelings and identify triggers. Providing the victim/survivor an opportunity to discuss his/her history of victimization and trauma.
Crisis Intervention-Assessing the dangerousness and potential lethality of the offender by talking with the victim/survivor about the history of the offender’s violence. Providing resources to meet victims’/survivors' immediate needs and developing a safety plan/measure.
Safety Planning / Measures-Helping the victim/survivor plan for safety at home, work, school, whether the victim/survivor is leaving or staying in the relationship including help identify safety measures.
Information and Referral Services-Making referrals to community agencies and to agencies outside the community.
Victim Advocacy- Assisting the victim/survivor in obtaining Orders of Protection/Restraining Orders, report crimes to police department, transporting and accompany to SANE exams /interviews, transporting to safe shelter and coordinating civil standby if needed.
Criminal Justice Support- Help the victim/survivor understand the proceedings throughout the criminal justice case, accompanying the victim/survivor to court hearings and meetings with criminal justice personnel.
Basic Need Advocacy-Assisting victims/survivors in obtaining basic needs such as food and shelter on an emergency basis.
Community Education- Providing education material at community events and at community agencies.

Population Served

Crime Victim Services (CVS) has the responsibility to provide services to victims/survivors of violent crimes in the Community, as well as community members who reside in the areas surrounding the Community.

The following is a list of victims/survivors of reported and non-reported violent crimes that will be served:

  1. Any Victims/Survivors of violent crimes to include sexual assault, dating violence, child sexual assault, stalking, domestic violence, families who are survivors of a homicide victim or violent crime.
  2. Secondary victims of violence, including parents, siblings and family members of Victim/ Survivors.
  3. Others who are victimized by violent crime that have not been reported. 

Populations and or crimes that Crime Victim Services does not provide services for include, but are not limited to:

  1. Known perpetrators of a violent crime who are also victims of a violent crime (exceptions can be made depending on circumstances and will be decided on a case-by-case basis)
  2. Suicides
  3. Property Crimes
  4. Child Removals by GRIC law enforcement or GRIC Child Protective Services, unless there is a violent crime committed at the same time as the child removal.
