Domestic Violence Shelter

Generally, domestic abuse is a pattern of behavior, including physical or sexual violence by and intimate, current or former partner. It is seen in male/female and same sex partner relationships.

Domestic abuse takes many forms and includes a range of actions intended to control: Isolation, intimidation, using children, emotional abuse, economic abuse, coercion and threats, minimizing, denying and blaming, cultural abuse, ritual abuse, male privilege and sexual abuse.

An intimate partner is someone who you live with or have lived with. This can be a boyfriend, a husband, a girlfriend or a wife.

About On Eagle's Wings

The Domestic Violence Shelter, On Eagle's Wings (OEW) was developed to provide emergency safe housing services within the community. 111c planning of the domestic violence shelter began in 2001 after the community council approved GR-13-01. In 2004, the first meeting of the Akimel O'odham against abuse was formed for the purpose of developing a shelter to meet the needs of female adult survivors and their children that are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

On May 1, 2013, On Eagles Wings opened its doors and began providing a 24-hour a day, seven days a week, safe living environment for Gila River Indian Community members/residents and their children. The shelter is built on five acres of land and includes ten bedrooms, a central kitchen, laundry and living area.
